Scotland in recent years have had a strong handle on the Calcutta Cup while underachieving in the Six Nations as a whole. On last weekend's evidence, those may have been the good days. Gregor Townsend's men were beaten by Italy in as Scottish a downpour as Rome is likely to have ever experienced.

A backline set up to attack didn't break the lines once, and although Wales are still the Wooden Spoon favorites, Scottish fans are already envisaging the next-worst case scenario. The only silver lining was that Blair Kinghorn and Duhan van der Merwe played no part in the embarrassment, and Darcy Graham only featured as a replacement.

However, to universal bemusement Townsend has left Kinghorn and van der Merwe out of the squad for this Round 2 clash too. Graham is once again on the bench. What makes the decision all the more bewildering is that van der Merwe, Scotland's record try-scorer, has dominated this fixture. The last time England went to Murrayfield, the wing scored a hat-trick.

After England limbered up with a predictably brutal 48-7 beatdown of Wales, Steve Borthwick would have expected Townsend's big guns to return to the fold. Instead, Scotland fans have been left hoping that today's starting XV might at least psyche Borthwick out instead.

Henry Arundell broke the deadlock and scored three tries in the rout, in which captain Maro Itoje only featured for the final half-hour. He'll start this afternoon's clash in place of Jamie George, with Marcus Smith coming in for Fin Smith in the only other change.
