Debbie Webster (Sue Devaney) is behind bars in Coronation Street, and the last thing she needs is to land herself in any bother with another inmate. Unfortunately, that’s exactly what she’s going to get.

The beloved character has become a prisoner as a result of pleading guilty to a crash that led to Billy Mayhew’s (Daniel Brocklebank) death. At the start of January, Carl Webster (Jonathan Howard) drove erratically out of Debbie’s wedding venue, with his sister (unaware at the time that she’s actually his mum) in the passenger side.

Carl crashed his car, which impacted how Corriedale unfolded. He then got out of the seat and placed Debbie behind the wheel instead. Due to the fact the character has dementia, she struggled to recall whether she actually was driving.

Debbie eventually pleaded guilty and was sent to prison. As she’s tried to adjust to the dark world, she’s come across Lou Michaelis (Farrel Hegarty), a former Weatherfield resident who’s currently doing time for attacking Gary Windass (Mikey North).

In upcoming episodes, Debbie is forced to explain her situation to Lou when she accidentally calls her Abi. After she chats to Lou about her onset dementia, it becomes clear that another inmate called Paula recognises Debbie.

‘I think she was willing to take the blame because she feels so guilty’, star Sue Devaney recently said as she discussed why Debbie has gone to prison for Carl’s crime.

‘She feels so guilty because Carl has been through such a hard time. She didn’t know that he had such a hard time growing up with Elaine. So when she finds out the guilt is dreadful. I think it’s in her head, she thinks that Carl is like he is because of her.
