Netflix is discontinuing support for a host of older devices including some smart TVs and games consoles in March 2026, at which point they'll no longer be able to play Netflix titles.

That's the bad news. The good news is that the solution is simple and, at the moment, cheap – you can get a Roku Streaming Stick HD for just $15.99 today at Best Buy, or an Amazon Fire TV Stick 4K Select for just $21.99 at Amazon. (Not in the US? Today's best prices in your country will be at the end of the article.)

The reason for the discontinuation is that older devices don't support newer video and audio compression formats, or may not be able to support newer security features. So from time to time, Netflix stops supporting them, as it did with smart TVs and streamers in 2019, on more smart TVs in 2023, on older Apple TVs in 2024 and on some older Fire TV devices in 2025.

This time around the devices affected include the PlayStation 3 and, according to FlatPanelsHD, the BT TV Box (Z4) and BT TV Recordable Box (G4) in the UK. Other set-top boxes and smart TVs are likely to be affected too, especially if they're 10 or more years old: manufacturers stop updating the apps of discontinued models, and eventually the apps can't handle the formats Netflix needs them to use.

Thankfully upgrading a smart TV to run the current app is simple and affordable: just put a Roku or Fire TV Stick into it. And with President's Day sales available for the rest of today in the US, there are discounts on both platforms.

At nearly 50% off this is an exceptionally cheap upgrade for pretty much any TV, and in addition to Netflix it supports all the other key streamers as well as The Roku Channel and its huge selection of ad-supported, fee-free live TV. The Streaming Stick doesn't do HDR or 4K but given that we're talking about bringing Netflix back to 10-year-old TVs, it doesn't need to.

Here's another deep discount on a streaming stick, this time running Amazon's Fire TV platform. It's marginally more expensive than the Roku but it's a 4K device with HDR10+, and via subscription it also supports Xbox cloud gaming via Xbox Game Pass. Like the Roku app it supports all the key streamers and also brings lots of ad-supported TV.

If you like the look of Roku's streamer but 4K and HDR (Dolby Vision, in this case) are deal-breakers for you then this is the Roku deal you need: it delivers everything the cheaper Streaming Stick delivers, but it does it in higher resolution and with HDR visuals where appropriate.
