Chelsea and Manchester United both reached out to Jurgen Klopp despite his ties to Liverpool (Picture: Getty)
Jurgen Klopp’s agent Marc Kosicke has claimed both Chelsea and Manchester United made unsuccessful approaches to hire the German after his departure at Liverpool.
There was shock and surprise as Klopp announced he would be leaving Liverpool at the conclusion of the 2023/24 campaign following nine years in the hot seat at Anfield.
After what had been a difficult period for the club, Klopp steered the Merseyside giants to a total of eight pieces of silverware, including the Champions League trophy in 2019 and the Premier League title the following season.
The extraordinary era of success cemented Klopp’s place among Liverpool’s greatest-ever and most popular managers alongside the likes of Bill Shankly and Bob Paisley.
After stepping down from his post with the Reds, the 58-year-old took on a role as the Head of Global Soccer for Red Bull group, overseeing their international network of clubs, including RB Leipzig and Red Bull Salzburg, as an advisor.
Klopp has kept his cards close to his chest when it comes to his future plans and has repeatedly gone on record saying he would never manage another team in England other than Liverpool.
However, this didn’t stop two of Liverpool’s biggest rivals trying their luck with Klopp before he began work with Red Bull back in January 2025.

‘Even Chelsea and Manchester United inquired, although Jurgen had clearly stated that he would not coach any other club in England. These inquiries keep coming,’ Klopp’s trusted advisor Kosicke told Transfermarkt.
‘He’s extremely happy with what he’s achieved.
‘It’s still wonderful to go down in history as one of the few coaches who only managed three clubs and were never fired.’
According to Sky Sports, both Chelsea and Manchester United have denied these claims made by Kosicke.

‘Maybe at some point he’ll say he needs to smell the locker room again. But at the moment he’s very, very happy in his role,’ Kosicke added.
‘Before joining Red Bull, Jurgen could have coached the USA or England.
‘Probably also Germany, if Julian Nagelsmann hadn’t already been there.’

Back in October, Klopp suggested it was ‘theoretically possible’ that he could one day return to manage Liverpool for a second spell.
But it’s clear the former Borussia Dortmund and Mainz boss has no immediate ambitions to re-enter the pressure cooker that is elite-level management.

‘I said I will never coach another team, a different team, in England. So that means if then it’s Liverpool … yeah. Theoretically it’s possible,’ Klopp said on The Diary of a CEO podcast.
‘I’m 58, that means I could make the decision in a few years, I don’t know.
‘Do I have to make the decision today? Then I will not coach again.
‘But thank God, I don’t have to do that. I can just see what the future brings.’
