People are 'zombified' to their phones
Ouroboros, the self-devouring snake, is the perfect metaphor for our time.
People are now zombified to their phones but, more apocalyptically, they are hooked on ‘social’ media.
The bosses of these social media platforms belong to the guild of cut-throat tech bros who’ve been pushing AI to replace human jobs, from accounting to graphic design, policing to civil service, to even the postal service and journalism.
Yet, in spite of our full knowledge that our jobs are disappearing and AI is not creating more than a handful of jobs in each neighbourhood, there has been no national debate nor major protests.
But there have been almost weekly protests against Israel and LGBT people. Because people are tied up to the algorithm and the algorithm protects itself, it doesn’t want you to be distracted from the existential threat AI and automation pose to your job and welfare.
It wants you to be disillusioned with democracy, so you don’t ever write to your MP. It wants you to believe the last bastion of democracy, journalism, is ‘legacy’, expired, so you are spoon-fed your news only through the algorithm. It’s making you eat your own livelihood, while they earn money from the ads in between your scrolls.

So we must all prepare for war? Why? For what? Sorry Messrs Starmer, Macron, Merz and Rutte, we’re just not doing it.
We know ordinary Russians don’t want war either. So why should we all die?

Russia has spent four years trying to beat Ukraine. Russia has dreadful, old and obsolete equipment, and millions of its soldiers are dead. Nato has the newest technology, decades ahead of Russia.
Russia has no chance against Nato.
Putin isn’t stupid, he knows if he drops nuclear bombs on any Nato country, the whole of Russia will be flattened. I’m therefore not worried about Russia and neither should you be. Greig, Edinburgh

I have tremendous admiration for Sarah Alcock (Metro paper, Wed), the nurse who is giving up her Christmas to work at her neo-natal clinic (despite it being her first as a mum) and to her husband, Dave, for supporting her.
